Having listened to Tom Lehrer spending Hanukkah in Santa Monica, I wondered if we might be able to come up with some homegrown lyrics, but while Sue came up with the brilliant notion of Hanukkah around Lake Wanaka, I could only suggest spending Rosh Hashanah in Whitianga and (forgive me) lighting the menorah in sunny Gore-ah. In spite of this, last night at practice at the temple, the Rebs invited me to light the menorah for the sixth evening of Hanukkah, so perhaps cross-cultural relations haven't been too badly damaged. And incidentally, if anyone can think of a NZ place name that rhymes with Yom Kippur, this is where the newly-enabled comments function comes into its own.

On the subject of cross-cultural relations, here's one of the songs we did for Hanukkah the other night, performed by the Afro-Semitic Experience. These guys are great (and have a very cool logo).

4 Comments:

According to the NZ place names database, and looking for names ending in "pur", there's lots of ridges, 4 homesteads (Larkspur, 2 Longspurs, and Flatspur), a few hills, one pass (Saddle Spur), and the intriguing "Bealey Spur" in the Arthur's Pass (-43.03, 171.62), defined as an "area of low or nil population".

No, I'm not normally this sad.

Aw, and I was going to try to rhyme it with Rotorua - at least as bad an effort as the original Yom Kippur in Mississipp-ur'! But if you're going to sully the Muse with actual research...

Mount Wilmur. I have no idea where it is, but it rhymes.

Berhampore? Middlemore? Strathmore? Not so good visually, but they sound right.... (unless you insist on pronouncing it like the smoked fish)
